Spotify has begun rolling out Lossless audio streaming for Premium subscribers — one of its most anticipated features. Starting September 10, 2025, the rollout covers more than 50 markets, including Australia, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US, and will be completed globally by October.
With Lossless, Premium listeners can stream tracks in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC at no extra cost. Playback is supported on mobile, desktop, tablet and a wide range of Spotify Connect devices, with Sonos and Amazon hardware support arriving next month.
What’s New
- Higher-fidelity streaming: Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC across nearly every track on Spotify.
- Lossless indicator: A tag in the Now Playing view confirms when users are hearing the upgraded stream.
- Expanded settings: Low, Normal, High, Very High and now Lossless for Wi-Fi, cellular and downloads.
- Device compatibility: Available across Spotify apps and most Spotify Connect devices.
Why It Matters for Labels, Artists and Distributors
- Studio-quality playback at scale: Fans can now hear recordings much closer to the masters you deliver — particularly valuable for high-end or detail-rich genres such as classical, jazz and iconic back catalogues.
- Competitive parity: Apple Music, Amazon Music and Tidal already offer lossless or hi-res audio. Spotify adopting it keeps the largest DSP aligned with other major services.
- No forced re-delivery: Spotify is upgrading its encoding pipeline. Tracks already delivered in 24-bit will stream in Lossless automatically; 16-bit content will remain at that quality unless you choose to re-upload.
The Bigger Picture
As Spotify expands into podcasts, audiobooks and AI-driven experiences, the arrival of Lossless underscores that music quality remains central to its Premium service. For artists, labels and distributors, it’s an opportunity to present their catalogue in the highest possible quality on the world’s largest streaming platform.
