The Revelator Story: Empowering Music Independence

The music industry has always been defined by change, but few shifts have been as seismic as the digital revolution. The transition from CDs to Napster, and eventually to streaming platforms like Spotify, didn’t just reshape how people consumed music—it upended the entire business model.

Bruno Guez, CEO and founder of Revelator, lived this transformation firsthand.

Running his own label, Quango Music Group, and working alongside industry legend Chris Blackwell, Bruno observed the stark contrast between major labels—who could afford significant investments in technology—and independent labels, left to navigate an increasingly complex landscape with limited resources.

Yet, beyond creative pursuits, Bruno faced numerous operational challenges behind the scenes. The industry’s infrastructure was outdated. Metadata was inconsistent. Rights management was fragmented. Royalty reporting was slow and opaque. In the 1990s, Bruno built internal systems to track publishing, licensing, and royalty distributions—early evidence of the technology-driven mindset that would later define Revelator.

This experience inspired a pivotal question:

What if independent labels and distributors had the tools to compete on their own terms, with automation, transparency, and efficiency built in?

From Frustration to Innovation

Bruno didn’t initially set out to build another music tech company; he set out to solve problems he intimately understood. The complexities of metadata, rights management, and financial reporting were obstacles he had confronted since the ’90s—first through custom-built label management systems and later through leveraging cloud-based solutions to streamline operations.

In the summer of 2012, he began developing the foundation for what would become Revelator—a cloud-based, data-driven platform designed to unify digital distribution, royalty reporting, rights management, and payments. By spring 2015, Revelator officially launched, introducing itself with the words “Music’s Everything.” prominently displayed on its homepage, marking a new chapter in music technology.

From the outset, the goal was clear: provide independent music businesses with infrastructure comparable to that of major labels, coupled with the flexibility and automation they needed to scale smarter, not harder.

Breaking Down Barriers for Independents

The independent music sector has historically faced structural challenges that make it difficult for labels and distributors to compete effectively. Fragmented data across multiple systems frequently obscures critical insights into catalog performance. Inconsistent metadata leads to costly distribution delays and missed revenue opportunities, while slow, opaque royalty payments leave artists and rights holders uncertain about their earnings.

Without adequate infrastructure, independent labels and distributors struggle to scale. Managing multiple revenue streams, contracts, and reporting tools often requires tedious manual work, limiting their ability to focus on growth and artist development.

Revelator was built to address these challenges. By creating an integrated, cloud-based platform that automates distribution, rights management, and royalty tracking, Revelator provides independent music businesses the tools and insights needed for operational efficiency. Enhanced transparency, faster payments, and streamlined workflows allow labels and distributors to reduce administrative burdens and devote more time to building sustainable careers for their artists.
